Hi Brett,
I'm not 100% sure this is what your trying to do but try
mapping the image you want on the planet using the
spherical image map on the Y axis and the width and height
wrap amounts set to 1.0. Next, map the target image on the
cube with a cubic image map. Don't forget to automatic
size it. Now move the globe out of the scene and go into
the objects panel and set the globe as the morph target for
the cube and turn on morph surfaces. Then, start the
animation with the cube 100% morphed into the sphere. This
worked for me but let me know if this was what you were
looking for.
